This particular pistol can be dated to 1942 by the rather rare 'Austempered' Springfield replacement barrel with heat lot 'PX-1'. This pistol belongs to the first series of X-serial number guns which were renumbered and refurbished at Springfield Armory & Augusta Arsenal between 1925-1953. So as not to duplicate serial numbers already in existance, it was decided to use a special serial range for this purpose, all with the 'X' prefix. Shortly after WW1 the military decided that it would institute a program to renumber pistols which had been recovered with defaced or obliterated serial numbers.
